Protection features

The IP code classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against the intrusion (including body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures. It is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The digits (characteristic numerals) indicate conformity with the conditions summarized in the tables below. Where there is no protection rating with regard to one of the criteria, the digit is replaced with the letter X. an electrical socket rated IP22 is protected against insertion of fingers and will not be damaged or become unsafe during a specified test in which it is exposed to vertically or nearly vertically dripping water. Another example is the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, one of the first cellular phones to be IP-rated; it is rated at IP58 and marketed as "dust resistant" and can be "immersed in 1.5 meter of freshwater for up to 30 minutes".

International Protection (IP) code

What the casing of the product is made of.

Performance

The technology that enables connectivity of the device, e.g. wired or wireless.

Connectivity technology

Bluetooth is a low-power radio technology developed to replace the cables and wires currently used to link or connect electronic devices such as personal computers, printers, and a wide variety of handheld devices including mobile phones. Because it uses radio-wave connectivity, a Bluetooth-enabled device has a constant, established connection to whatever browser it uses. This saves the user the trouble of logging on to check for emails or news updates, for example.

Bluetooth

The wireless communication standards supported by the device to ensure compatibility with different types of audio or data services (e.g., A2DP for high-quality audio streaming).

Bluetooth profiles

The type of bluetooth technology in the product e.g. Bluetooth Smart (v4.0).

Bluetooth version

The maximum distance over which the device can maintain a stable wireless connection, typically measured in metres.

Ports & interfaces

Ear coupling describes the way in which headphones or earphones stay attached to, or inside, the ear. There are three common types of ear coupling: circumaural, supra-aural and intra-aural. Circumaural headphones enclose your ears with large pads that suppress external noise. Supra-aural headphones are typically more lightweight and sit on top of the ears with small pads. Intra-aural headphones come in two basic designs and neither style sits on the head itself. The first are ear buds, which sit just outside of the ear canal, on top of your ear lobes. The second type is actually inserted directly into the ear canal and offers some external noise suppression.

Ear coupling

The design style of the headphones that fit inside the ear canal, such as Earbuds or In-ear monitors.

Intraaural headphones type

The range of frequencies (low to high sounds) that the headphones can produce.

Headphone frequency

The measure of how efficiently the unit converts an electrical signal into sound, typically expressed in decibels per millivolt (dB/mW).

Headphone sensitivity

Headphones

The characteristics of the microphone bulit into the device in terms of the reception of signals from all or just one direction, i.e. omnidirectional (better for concerts and the like vs unidirectional, more suitable for voice recording.

Microphone type

The minimum sound pressure level required to produce a specific electrical output signal, typically measured in decibels (dB).

Microphone sensitivity

Microphone

Description of battery supplied with the product, such battery form factor (e.g. AA/AAA).

Battery type

The type of battery in the device, e.g. nickel–cadmium (NiCd).

Battery technology

Number of hours on average for continuous play. This is dependent on the device battery capacity.

Continuous audio playback time

The total amount of time the device can play audio continuously when including the additional battery capacity provided by the charging case, measured in h.

Continuous audio playback time (with charging case)

The total estimated duration the device can be used for calls, including the additional battery capacity provided by the charging case, measured in h.

Talk time (with charging case)

The total time a battery can power a device for calls. As the device drains the battery during a call, the talktime left in the battery is diminished until the device is turned off or the battery recharged. The longer the talktime the less frequently you will need to recharge. Talktime, expressed in hours and minutes, is much shorter than standby time because transmission requires more power.

Talk time

Indicates whether the product supports a high-current charging standard to reduce the time required for a full charge.
